I have often gone out in the country and picked up dead branches, breaking the lengths into sizes I need. I wash them in hot soapy water and when dry, I then glue them together building the frame around the mirror to the size (and bulk) I want. You have mostly likely seen the plastic spoon idea. If not, go on Pinterest or Google and type in: "frame made with plastic spoons" and you'll see it. Another idea is to buy dollar store floral branches and remove just the leaves, then spray paint them and layer the leaves slightly on top of each other making a frame. As another mentioned, seashells are also pretty. Old tiles from Scrabble games are fun too - leave them as is or paint them, if desired. You are only limited by your imagination!

It depends on where you want the mirror to go, I think. I think you would need to use wood or some sort hard surface as your base. I once surrounded a mirror with 2" square cut outs from soda drink cans, did one with beer cans as well. I have seen mirrors done w/ seashells, candy wrappers, spray painted plastic children's small toys -- the sky is the limit!

depending on where you live, tree branches make a great border. If you are by the ocean if you can find drift wood, that would be nice too.

Small single color or multi colored ceramic tiles they use on back splashes can be glued on then grouted.
