My hummingbird vine is overgrown, how far back can I trim it and ?

    The general rule of thumb is to prune no more than 1/3 of any plant at a time.

    I agree. You should never cut back more than 1/3 of a plant at one time or it may stunt it. If you need to remove more than that, you could cut back 1/3 now...give a little time for the plant to recuperate, and then trim back again.
