My sister and my father both had raccoons in attic. Both were told by exterminators that they had to wait until mom leaves with babes.

so true....if a human scent is on the babes the parents may kill them as intruders. The other is the parents abandoning them.....my uncle hand fed many.....trees going down in a storm his job was to open the roads. My uncle was liecienced as a wild life rehabilitator. He had to teach the babes how to get food.

Call a professional, they can be rabid, and you don't want to mess with that.

You should hire an animal control contractor to trap the raccoons and remove them from the building.

After the contractor is satisfied that all the raccoons have been caught, he/she should repair the entrance they have been using so it is no longer available to raccoons.

All feces and soiled insulation, drywall, and plaster should be removed. Whoever does this should wear a respirator. The area may need to be sprayed with an odor neutralizing product, but your contractor will advise you on that and any other details that will need to be addressed.

Once you have excluded the animals and removed the damaged pieces of your home, you can then repair what was damaged.

Good luck and remember, it’s cheaper and easier to keep them out than it is to get them out.

Call a wild animal exterminator then cover all openings with heavy 'wire' screen. Animals will claw right thru nylon screens. DO NOT try to catch racoons or any other wild animals. Coons have sharp teeth and claws and often carry rabies as do many other wild animals.

Contact someone that will use a live trap process to catch the raccoon and then return it to the wild.

Nothing sadder than a kit without it's mother. Mother is just attempting to find a safe place to raise her young. PLEASE don't kill the mother or trap her leaving the kits. If you can trap them together, take them to a rehab specialist; otherwise, try hard to deal with it until mom moves the family out. If it becomes too much, contact a wildlife wrangler to help remove the family.

While they are your "guests," see if you can figure out how mom is coming and going. The moment they are out, start looking for all entrances and exits, no matter how small, in the roof, soffits, siding, windows, etc. Use 1/4-inch hardware cloth to close up all holes, cracks, etc. , to prevent not only more racoons but squirrels, birds, etc. If you have a chimney that's not covered, get a good cap.

Thank you very much for the advice. I am going to consult a professional. I never thought about the possibility that there could be a whole family!

I would recommend hiring a professional exterminator.... Coons can be quite dangerous and have a mouthfull of sharp teeth!! Not to mention possibly rabies!! Then someone will have to find his access hole and securely plug that or more will move in!! It's not just removing the critter, which is a danger itself, but finding and plugging the access points.
