What type of bolts do I need to create a storage bed?

I have a vintage wooden headboard and footboard that I want to attach to some cube storage organizers to make a storage bed. Has anyone done this? I need to know what kind of bolts to use.

Also, whether I need to add cross slats to support a mattress and box springs. The storage shelf units are made of MDF.

Thanks for your good ideas!

I'm not sure about the bolts, but I would definitely add cross slats to support the box spring and mattress .

They are called "carriage bolts" and Home Depot has them. They will secure the headboard and footboard to the cubes. And yes, you need slats to support your box spring.
