How can I make my own chemical-free, anti-fatigue kitchen mats?

I have complex fibromyalgia with scoliosis and associated neck, shoulder, back, hip, knee and sciatica pain challenges, at varying times; and, severe environmental and chemical allergies. I have not been able to find a quality, non-toxic, chemical-free mat for my kitchen and bathroom. I want to create something, too, that has color and/or a print pattern. Is this even possible or am I completely overreaching here?

Ouch. Sounds painful. What can you do (in terms of crafts)?

  • I have gel mats in my kitchen and could not stand for long periods of time without them. Since you have chemical allergies, how about encasing a commercial gel mat? Wrap it in 100% cotton quilt batting then making a washable cover for it from a durable all natural upholstery fabric? Granted you would have to be careful as all the batting and fabric could cause a tripping hazard. Chemical free anything is hard to find these days . . . I prefer 100% cotton clothes, either outrageously over priced or dirt cheap and tacky.

You might try very dense foam that you might find in sewing depth of a store like walmart, or a Joannes. Another idea is to glue several yoga or camping ground mats together. As glue, maybe try spray adhesive.

But anything that provides some cushioning, I'm afraid you are facing off-gassing likely to bother you. The best remedy at least in part is to subject to very hot temperature for a period of time. A hot garage, plus time in the sun could work wonders.

If you are able to get this far, then you might be able to use water-based paint to add a design. Another option would be to affix a door mat (the rough, natural bristle kind) to the cushioned mat that can be painted.

You might find it easiest to buy one of the many available, in colors and design that you like. Then subject to heat and sun for a couple of weeks, see if you can tolerate it. I share some of your health issues and know it's a tough way to live.

Make braided rugs using old bath towels. This will allow you to pick the colors you want, give you the cushion you need, and you can wash them in whatever you need to.
