Wash with soap and water, scrape off any and all loose paint and especially any rust. Then buy paint meant for metal. Probably Rust-oleum. It will combat rusting more than most paint I've found.
I would sand it down a bit and then repaint.
Wash the gate well, musing a scrub brush if necessary, I would use TSP and let dry thoroughly. Then use a primer and paint formulated for metal. There are both brush on and spray application paints available. Also purchase a few plastic drop cloths so you do not spray anything you do not want to paint! Any paint or hardware store will have what you need.
do not use tsp it is highly toxic.....simply sand and wipe off the grime, use rustoleums 2X spray paint for metal doing two lights coats allowing to dry in-between,once dry seal with a uv clear outdoor protectant
Janet is very limited in her knowledge but pretends to be an expert on everything, answering over 100 questions a day with google answers or bad advice. Many use TSp with no problems. Her instructions are just one approach and not nearly a universal answer. The product you choose will have their own set of instructions. Do not substitute other brands in the process.
TSP should be okay- just be very careful with the instructions- good luck!
