I have bad soil.I added Grass Starter to the soil, but still no grass!

I hope you covered it with a little dirt after you laid it out there, some use straw and keep it watered so it will germinate. Don't use miracle grow or anything until it gets a good height and you should wait awhile to fertilize anyway, it won't need it.

Seed really does have to be kept moist until it sprouts and that may mean watering multiple times a day. It shouldn't be mowed until it's at least 3 inches high.

But it really sounds like your soil needs to be improved before seeding. There are multiple ways to do it...if it's compacted, aeration will help a lot. If it's out of nutrients, you can try a cover crop such as white clover. ...it gets tilled in after flowering, and helps fix nitrogen that will then help anything else grow.

If the area isn't too large, you can "top dress" with compost before planting. "Scarifying" with a rake to help roughen the soil surface is usually recommended before seeding also. Plan to "tamp down" the seeded areas for good contact with the soil.

If any of these terms are new to you, there's a ton of info online that a simple search will provide. As you can tell, grass doesn't just magically grow!

There is a little more to starting a lawn than tossing out some seed. Chances are, all the seed you spread was eaten by birds or other creatures. Here are a couple links to get you started!

You probably need to aerate or break up the soil a bit to give those seeds something to grow into. I've seen people do this by walking with shoes with football or baseball cleats, but if you have a large yard get a pro to do it. Less time

I suggest you have a load of quality top soil hauled in from a local vendor. It will cost money but only top soil will grow sod. You cannot grow grass in fill dirt.

Are you watering it daily when you plant it? Did you put some dirt over the seed so the birds didn't eat the seed?
