I've let it do it's own thing for many years. Should I be cutting it yearly or so?

I cut mine back each year -- just before spring. You can get some good books on how to prune them. I find that I like their looks better and they are much happier -- they tell me so.

Cut out all dead wood and then shape it. don't give it too much of a shock first year. 2nd year. Cut out dead wood and crossing branches by half and Shape.

3rd year. Repeat the above Plus cut out all weak branches. Gradually get it back into shape without killing it. Also give it a boost with Rose fertilizer.

I like this method, for the sake of the rose bush and also because it is a gradual change, rather than drastically cutting back all at once. It looks better while the plant rejuvenates.

This rejuvenation method works with lilacs, too.

Cut it back to a third of its size in early spring
