A light sanding and then wipe with a damp cloth before priming. I used a swiffer type mop and attached a sheet of sandpaper to it to sand larger areas.

Wipe it down with soap and water, dry, prime, paint. If there is any staining or you fear that the color may seep through, use KILZ as your primer.

Use a good wood cleaner then paint with a primer then paint with your color. Should you not want the wood look you will need to putty the lines like with sheet rock before any paint.

Clean with TSP - it does not leave behind any residue, lightly sand to degloss, wipe down with damp sponge, use a good Bonding primer (Val spar Bonding primer sold at Lowe's is awesome)Val spar Reserve paint has great adhesion and the stain resistance is unbelievable.
