I have moderate success with these plants in the past here in the NYC area during the Summer months. But lately, i am disappointed in its lack of blooming. In the past, under the same conditions i have had luck only with the "Barbra Kurst'..variety. I don't know what these are. When they arrived late last Summer, they were in full bloom. Came Fall, brought them indoors and still bloomed for me every couple of weeks. I read all i can possible read on the culture of these plants, and still no results. I finally have convinced myself, that they will only bloom on short days exposures, that explains why they did bloom indoors during the short days of Fall. I rather they bloomed outdoors.

You are overwatering. They don't like their feet wet

Thanls, just curious...how did you know about my watering service? I did not mention anything about the watering in my OP...but, here is what i have been doing about watering...i usually wait until i see them wilting...then i water...but of course, if they are outdoors, which they are here in the NYC area during the summer, how does one avoid Summer showers as brief as they may be, during the hot Summer months? Mother nature waters them more than i do. Of course, if I am home i will drag them in, but what happens when i am away? Do you see the delimna about watering safely?

The dilemma is trying to grow a plant that is best suited in the south...

I'm in Florida and they don't bloom here in the summer because of the rain. They like hot direct sunlight. Will not bloom in shade. Hope this might help. When you are watering them when you see them wilt you are probably using too much water. They don't need much. You don't want to soak them. I understand rain is a problem and there isn't much you can do about rain.

i guess your right, but how does one explain for the constant blooming I once got from the "Barbra Kurst' variety, under the same conditions?

Well, if one goes by the usual comments made about watering till you see water coming out of the bottom of the pot considered for all potted plants, than i am guilty. How else would the bottom roots be able to extend themselves if not touched by water?

You are definitely overwatering. Use half of what you are using. THEY DO NOT LIKE THEIR FEET WET. They will rot and never bloom.

They use an 8-8-8 blooming fertilizer that lasts about 2 months so you will buy them. Purple blooms more often than any other color.
