They like lots of sunlight BUT cool roots, therefore, keep a good layer of mulch (or stones) on top of the soil (at the base of the plant, of course) or you can have plants at the base. I had yellow roses planted with my purple Clematis which looked beautiful together and have also planted sun-tolerant Hosta as they both shade the roots of the Clematis. I never needed fertilizer but would cut the plant back in early Spring.
