Other than Hen & Chicks, any succulent I put outside dies! What to do?

I have tried both regular soil and cactus mix. I am assuming not all succulents are hardy for Iowa's hot, dry, humid summer. Should they be in a light shady spot. What do you do to keep them alive?

They prefer to be ignored, very little water. About every 2 plus weeks, but little.
Let them dry out completely. They basically are full of water. Sometimes I wait for them to start to wrinkle, then water.
I use Miracle-Gro potting soil (regular kind) and mine grow fine . It's currently 96 in the shade at 3:20 p.m. with 100% humidity. Water every other week or if you feel the top 2 inches of soil dry to the touch .
Yes...let them dry out completely before re-watering. They should be getting plenty of sunlight, and you might try adding a bit of sand to your soil if it doesn't already have some. Most succulents thrive in a sandy soil.
Succulents are not cacti. They like bright, indirect outdoor sun and small sips of water on a regular basis. Give that a try.
