Can I cover my Gross Mattress? Any ideas would be appreciated...

I think you probably may need to do an all - over clean with baking soda., by leaving it on for a few hours and then scrubbing. Alternately, you can look online to rent one of those machines that the pros use to clean your couch, and ask the company if it can be used on a mattress. (i would be more concerned about getting out all the germs/bacteria rather than just the stains). Feel well!

im sure you already have turned your mattress over. Some people don't even realize that they should be doing that every once in a while. Wash as you would your couch if it were soiled. Place a fan nearby to put on to help with drying. Then purchase a mattress cover that goes right on like a fitted bottom sheet.

there are well....covers that will completely cover a matress...sack like with a zipper closure at the foot. Water proof ones. Not very expensive.

Rent a rug shampooer & use the furniture attachment. After a couple shampoos, suck up as much liquid as possible by pushing down on the mattress with the attachment - do not dispense soapy water this time. Next redo it again with bleach & water rinse, suck out all you can again. Bleach chemicals evaporate, so it should not harm your skin, use a mattress pad under the sheet. OR get someone who recovers furniture to remove the out side of the mattress & repad & recover it.

Saturate the stain with Simple Green and let it soak for a few minutes then use a wash cloth soaked in Dawn to scrub the spots. Vacuum for several minutes on strongest setting possible. Let it air dry then repeat if necessary. This worked to get puppy pee off my mattress.

I would hire a professional cleaning service- your stained mattress is probably also full of dust mites . Staney Steamer or similar company can steam it clean. They steam clean carpet, upholstery and flooring.

I use borax to get stains out of mattresses. Also helps with smells. Dampen the mattress with a spray bottle, then sprinkle a heavy layer of borax on the damp spots. Scrub it in with a washcloth or something similar and let it dry, then vacuum it off. I also add it to the wash to help remove smells when one of the kids has an accident.

Thank you so much. I was REALLY hesitant to post that question. It's so embarrassing, but, even if I throw it out, I don't want my neighbors to see it. It kinda looks like a crime scene.

Begin by vacuuming it thoroughly to bring fresh air through the mattress. If your mattress is the same on both sides, turn the mattress over to the clean side and turn end for end to prevent uneven wear. Invest in a good quality mattress pad to cover the stains if you can't turn the mattress. Congratulations on being able to be up and around.

A thought, since you can't flip the mattress upside down (but I have successfully trimmed a pillow top OFF my mattress!) is to at least "swivel" it so the other side gets the same wear. Once it is cleaned and a fresh cover put on it, you will basically be starting over. So pleased you are up and out of that prison!

it might be good to get a new mattress. reason being is, unless you have it professionally cleaned (and even then) once a mattress gets to be in that shape, its better to get rid of it because of stuff that can start to grow deep inside.

i understand about throwing it out but you can purchase a mattress box from a moving company and then you don't have to share your mattress history with your neighbors.

You have gotten some excellent ideas from other Hometalkers here...I just want to wish you a full recovery over time...and hope you are looking at much better days!

I hope your cleaning project is what you want it to be.....stain removed and sanitized. If the stain is still there after doing these things and the mattress is still very usable, I would flip it over. (I was taught to flip the mattress from "head-toe".....not from side to side.) Then, I would add two mattress covers to it. I use two mattress pads on my beds. I put a regular, pillow top mattress pad on first. Then, I add a pillow top mattress pad which is waterproof. By doing this, I never have to worry about any one who spends the night in my home: adults, children, or people with pets. It is wonderful that you are doing much better after your illness. They make awesome pillow toppers now a days for mattresses! They are not terribly expensive either. They often have them on sale at JC Penny's That's what I would do. So glad you are up and back at it, sorry to hear that you were ill .

Mattress pads are a good idea.

I have had success removing stains with the following:

*high percentage rubbing alcohol--the higher the better, I found 99% at Costco, and 91% at pharmacy chains

*Resolve spray, scrub in and use a DAMP not dripping cloth with hot water, repeat as necessary.

*Folex carpet cleaner, it removes everything. I bought some years ago, and just finished the bottle, and it never lost its power. It was cheaper than the other cleaners at the time: http://www.folexcompany.com/

You can also make a baking soda paste (not too wet), spread it on, let it dry for a few hours then vacuum.

I have also used shaving cream in a pinch. Let it sit a few hours and vacuum.

If you are afraid of using water, stick to foam carpet spot cleaners.

I also want to mention, that I bought 2 memory foam twin mattresses at Walmart, about 6-7 years ago for a guest room. I wanted to be able to stack them, and put them together if need be for a king bed. They were under $250 each, and ended up being the most comfortable mattresses! We have a $2000 mattress that doesn't compare. They came with washable stretchy terry cloth type mattress pads. One was a bit longer than the other, but for the price and comfort, I didn't mind. DS ended up sleeping on it for close to 3 years, because he found it more comfortable than his expensive pocket coil bed.

There are also mattresses that are supposed to be affordable that you can order, and people are singing their praises. Ikea has some too.

If you want to throw it out, just buy a $ or discount store mattress cover or 2 and put it on before you put it out for the garbage.

OUT! PetCare Oxy-Fast took red jello out of my beige carpet with 3 treatments and left a lovely smell. Walmart pet department. I use it on everything now with grandkids. Best wishes.

I agree with those that say shampooing is best, but not always doable. Try filling a spray bottle with peroxide ( you can buy it that way now) and over the course of a couple days spraying, let dry and respray. It will really help. Also Bed Bath and Beyond sells a product called "Zero Odor" that is wonderful. If it has an odor after the peroxide, spray it with that. Spray peroxide will even remove blood that has been through the dryer. You just have to spray, let dry and respray several times. Good luck.

Try hydrogen peroxide & warm water. I used it to get blood out of carpeting and it worked awesome. Spray, let set, blot with paper towels. Repeat if needed. I'd also purchase a padded mattress cover for a little added comfort. Best wishes with your recovery. Blessings to you.

Hydrogen peroxide and Cream of tarter got old stains out of tablecloths, napkins and guest towels that hadn't been used for years. Rub on stain and let sit til stain disappears. The hydrogen peroxide will disinfect the cloth. Keep pouring and rubbing, then cleanup or wash with water. You can dry it with a hair dryer.

Vinegar also is good for odors and cleaning. The smell of vinegar will disappear eventually.

Folex gets any stain out - I'm in cat rescue, so even the puke stains (that look like your stain), come out of our very light beige carpet. You can get it at Lowe's, and use a Spotbot spot cleaner.

I would sew a flat sheet onto it.. There is probably some sort of edge or lip around the top side of the mattress that you can hand sew a flat sheet to.

Glad your feeling better. They make really nice mattress covers these days. One that fits like glove zippered like a pillow sham.

Get a new one

Pour 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide into an empty spray bottle add 3 tablespoons of baking soda with a funnel add a drop of dish soap (I used Dawn)

Spray on mattress and let dry!

I was bed ridden for two years on and off I have a pillow top to and I cant afford to buy another mattress I bought in a blue bottle oxy stain removal I sprayed it on let it set awhile and I used a not saturated hand towel rubbed it and it made it lighter also Get baking soda sprinkle on when dry and vacuum Mine is still a little stained . Also try free cycle or craigslist alot of times people are moving and offer free ones I received a full one that was a few years old for the grandkids I know people are like eeew But you check to see if there are any signs of brown in corners or underneath for bed bugs I pray you are doing better Keep looking up because that is what it is all about God Bless Paula Chester Nj

Once your done cleaning the mattress top, put a fan on it to dry it faster.

Hydrogen Peroxide in spray bottle( full strength) is great 4 most stains. Lemon juice will treat others.Let dry thoroughly. Then febreeze.
