There is no need to use a chemical based shampoo to kill the fleas on the dog. I use Kirk's castile bar soap and it knocks them down, but any gentle shampoo will do it in 10 mins. The fleas suffocate and you won't irritate the skin. However, your dog won't be protected from re infestation. Use a top spot flea treament, Frontline Plus or Advantix as directed. Vacuum everything, everyday and get rid of the contents of the vacuum each time, take it outside. If things are really bad you can use a spray with growth inhibitor premise spray and it will get things under control in no time. I have tried all the 'natural' methods due to having a grooming shop in my home and not one of them really works. I draw the line for using chemicals when there is the suffering of the animals to consider. The growth inhibitor has caused no harm to my dogs or cats and I am flea free.
I switch up between Frontline and Advantix. The little buggers seem to get immunity pretty quickly. Make sure you are applying on a dog that is not wet, or freshly bathed, they need the oils to spread the solution. That's why I use the castile soap on my dogs, it doesn't strip the oils so I can treat them as soon as they are completely dry.
You can use a drop of dawn dish soap and add enough water to work up a good coating all over the body...let sit for about 3 mins then rinse off...the dawn dish soap breaks down the fleas exoskeleton and they die...this is a all natural solution for your pet...hope this helps you and your fur baby...you can also Google home remedies for other suggestions
My dog Sadie Mae had fleas when I bought her as a 6 week old puppy. I took her to my Vet the next day for a check up and her 1st shot. I asked him what to do about the fleas. He told me that she couldn't use anything on the market until she was 4 months old. He did however, tell me the best thing he had found for puppies and kittens was Blue Dawn Dishsoap. He told me to put her in a dishpan with warm water make sure to wet her body good (not to wet her face or ears) but to make sure fo get under her neck. Lather her up real good and wrap her in a soft towel to leep her warm. After 5 minutes rinse all the soap off with warm water. Wash the fa e and ears with a wash cloth.
I found this to be the best way I had ever used in the past. I enjoy giving her a bath and I'm pretty sure she likes it too. Sadie will be 8 years old next month and she runs to the bathtub when I say bath time. Sadie is a small dog so this is easy. I don't know how it would be with a big dog.

Many rescue groups use this, as it's inexpensive and safe for even the smallest infested babies, just be extra careful not to get it in the eyes. start soaping at the neck to keep fleas from escaping onto the face of the animal, and then just as Karen said in previous post, let it sit for several minutes, rinse, wash the face (making sure to check face and ears for stray fleas) and try thoroughly. For animals too compromised to bathe, you can try manually removing with a fine toothed comb, keeping a small dish of rubbing alcohol to drop the fleas in for an instant kill.
