If the stain has penetrated into the wood you need to sand it down,

if there is staining then that means there was no polyurethane finish to protect it from moisture spills and therefore it has soaked into the wood like a sponge. The only way to get it out is to sand it and depending on if it's solid hardwood or hardwood venere depends on if you can sand it down deep enough to get to the good wood. sometimes you can lift a register cover on the floor and see the thickness. if it's thick enough for sanding and obviously there is no protective coating left then I would recommend a professional coming in to sand the entire floor, restain and re polyurethane the floor so that it brightens up, has even color and is protected in the future. We did this and it looks amazing!!!
