drywall jack, put the drywall on it, it has a place to hold it, raise it up where you want it, position it just right, tighten it against the ceiling carefully, screw it in place. You can also use 1/2 inch or 5/8, Thicker the better. Be sure you get it on the ceiling square with the ceiling, no gaps where ceiling meets wall. Put drywall screws at each joist. Rent a drywall screw gun so you don't break the paper. Do the whole ceiling, then mud and tape joints. Let dry and go back over it a second time, filling any divots(holes) etc. Get it perfectly smooth. Prime before you paint. That will show your holes and bad places. Fix them, when you are done, prime the repair spots carefully.

Wait a few days until everything is dry. Check once more. If everything looks smooth, no bumps, cracks, holes then you can paint. Any bad places will show, promise and look bad when finished. May take sanding to get it right. It is work, be prepared. Professionals make it look easy. For us, lots of work.
