I have a mum variety and deadhead them constantly so that they continually produce blooms all season long.
Yes to avoid them getting straggly and for more blooms in fall.
Pinch back mums until you see them produce small single lobed leaves, stop then as they are getting ready to set buds. Mums have been hybrydized until they begin to bloom much earlier.
