I have wooden cabients painted yellow. I would like to repaint them the same color with a more durable paint so that I have less wear than I am currently experiencing.

Also, is in necesssary that I sand/remove current paint prior to repainting?

You should definitely sand lightly to remove any shiny finish on your cabinets. It will help your new paint adhere better and be more durable. Most home centers sell a special kitchen/bath paint the is more durable. It is made especially for cabinets, and kitchen/bath areas that get more use. Check into the options available in your area.

You don't need to remove the paint that's currently on the cabinets to repaint just clean them well with a mixture of tsp and water. The higher the gloss the more durable the paint so for kitchen cabinets I would recommend gloss paint and for added protection I would put a coat of polycrylic over the top of the paint. This will make cleaning easier, and extend the life of the paint.

Make sure they are clean and dry. Use acrylic latex paint. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Be careful with tsp, you have to use it very carefully. If you use a really good primer, like Zinsser 123 or Rustoleum, this will help your next layer of paint adhere better and more smoothly, as well.
