What is the white fungal object that has taken over my herb-garden?

The things are up to 8 in in diameter, attached to the base of my plants and go about 7 inches into the ground and spread into a colony. How do I get rid of them/

G'day Yolanda, all the best of getting rid of - before you go buying stuff try milk I am not saying that it will work it's worth a try, in a 1ltr spray bottle put a tablespoon or two of full cream milk to the bottle of water and spray it on. The idea is the milk puts a film of oil that chokes the plant, making sure you cover under leaf as well. This will cost 10c to try sorry if it doesn't work. That is my 10c worth...//
