Painting kitchen cupboard hinges Help!!

Help! I'm ready to spend the money on new hinges, but really don't want to because of matching holes, style, size, etc. What a hassle that would be. So much easier to spray paint. But what about the prep work involved? Is there any? I've read both sides of the fence: Prep, No Prep. What's the best way for the best effect? Hinges aren't or shouldn't be touched or handled on a daily basis, so there would be no real reason for them to chip unless they're painted improperly. I've even read about boiling the hardware to get the crud off prior to painting. Any knowledge regarding this method? Or any better, faster, easier way to do this job, outside of purchasing new? I'm anxious to get my cupboard doors back up. Thx.

i didn't spray paint mine, but did hand paint with a pewter paint....handles hibges and even the screen windows got painted....7 months on, no chips or issues. I just cleaned (decreased) them well before painting....saved a HUGE amount of money by not replacing everything

I'd soak them in a TSP/water mixture to get off all the grease. Then spray paint in whatever color you choose.

I didn't know what TSP was and looked it up. It says not to use on metal. Have you used it that way and what were your results? My husband actually has some; I did not know that. Plz let me know. Thx so much for your help and input! :)

Since you don't need to get down to the base metal, I agree that soaking them in a good degreaser is the best idea. Maybe a little light sanding with metal-use sand paper to help the new paint stick. Rustoleum makes a bunch of really nice metallic paints that may go with your décor.

Definitely deep clean. I used spray paint, several light coats. Use high quality brand however you apply it.

I used Krudkutter as I had already purchased that to degrease the cabinets before chalk painting them, but have since seen various diy recipes on Pinterest. I will say that the krudkutter worked a treat though.

We started with hot water and Dawn in the sink, then they went into the dishwasher.

(we should've primered our cabinets though.)
