I have fruit flies and can't get rid of them. I don't even have any food or fruit out.
Get you one of those bug zappers, or add a little fan to blow them away. http://bestreviews.com/best-bug-zappers

If they appear when your porch light goes on, use a yellow insect light bulb
I usually rid the porch of all fly enticing things, then I spray Outdoor Flying Bug repellent around the entrance. Usually that's all it takes since they are just 'clingy' before a rain.

I get a zip lock bag and fill almost full with water and add 2 or 3 pennies. Hang it near your door. With their multifaceted eyes, the flies see the pennies in the bag of water as a giant enemy or predator. Keeps them away for us anyway!
I also use ziplock/water bags with success, but the bags with pennies sounds even better and logical!
