Can I just paint them with paint?

there are several products available on the market that are designed just for painting counters. So your answer is Yes, However please understand. The life expectancy of a painted counter is not nearly as long as the original one that is in place. You need to use care when cutting, and moving things around on the top. Cutting boards and mats designed to use on counters are strongly suggested. Do a search at the top of the page for painted counters and you will find dozens of great results of those who have chosen that route.

There are products that range from comestic cover ups to stripping and applying new surfaces via paints.But what ever method I chose I would recommend a sealant gloss cover over.

Rustoleum has a product out called Transformation that does a beautiful job with counter tops. They can be made to look like granite.
