Pour boiling water directly on the lower stems/roots. This will kill the plant immediately and you should be able to pull the plant right away. Bag the plant (don't put it in the compost) afterward. If they are in an area that isn't bothering anything, the flowers are loved by bees and butterflies, and birds love thistle seed (aka Niger seed).
