I read where a lady used wooden bbq skewers and made a "fence" with fishing line around her garden bed - worked for her.
Sprinkle red pepper around the vegetables and their leaves, and on a few of the lower vegetables. You should wash vegetables before serving them, so that should take care of the pepper. Best wishes 😇
