i am wondering if painting the exterior of our house (which is shiplap timber) black will cause any problems? Warping or blistering in the sun?

I would definitely use a solid body black stain, NOT paint......Amazing appearance and never blister or peal....

A stain is a good idea. You can also use a quality oil or 100% acrylic latex primer, and paint the surface with a premium-quality, 100% acrylic latex house paint.

i have cedar planking in my house and the trim, shutters are all painted semigloss black! Not one issue from using paint vs. stain. Paint till last a lot longer. Our sherwin Williams guy told us the semi would outladt the flat, matte and high gloss if black was my final choice. I still love it after 5 years. And pollen cleanup is a breeze!
