In a nutshell, the answer is maybe. That's not exactly how it's done in Hawai'i. However, they have special conditions there. The top of the pineapple if torn off, will form roots and send a spike up the second year on which a new pineapple will grow. However, each of the little sections on the pineapple's skin is actually a seed, so burying your pineapple may actually result in one of the seeds germinating. BUT, they need warm temps, correct soil and proper watering. So, Bob, unless you live in South Florida, the Texas coast or Southern California, you're going to have a hard time growing a new fruit. Check out Janet's suggestion and best of luck.

I think you could do them in a planter. Buy a pineapple cut the top off put the top in the planter. Enjoy.
