How to make a log lamp

by Donna
I have some pieces of birch that I want to make into lamps. I know they make a 12" threaded pipe kit. What I don't have is a drill bit that can make a 12" hole. Do they make such a thing? Is there another way to do this? I'm a novice at doing anything like this. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.
This is my starting point. I know they have to be cut, sanded and sealed.

This is what I want to create. Of course, I would add a finished base and a shade.

They do make 12" drill bits, you can mark the center on each end, and drill half way from each end with a 6" x 3/8"

In addition, when drilling larger holes in wood, begin with smaller bits and work your way up to the size you want.... you run the risk of splitting the wood if you use too large a bit too quick.... I have learned that first hand...

I love birch trees! Make a perfect shade for it. Get a shade that is smooth (not fabric). Pick birch tree leaves and press them dry and then use Mod Podge to adhere the leaves on the shade. Let it dry and then coat it several times over. I have made them using ferns and fall leaves. They are unique and beautiful.

I love fall leaves and would like to try your idea of covering a smooth shade with them. Thank you so much for the idea. I have also seen leaves Mod Podged onto stained plywood and sealed with more Mod Podge.

I found it on the side of the road. Someone had put it out for the town to pick up - way too beautiful for waste!

Mark your grid on the ends, then make sure you are holding the drill completely perpendicular.
