After removing the toilet, it was time to remove the sink and vanity during my bathroom remodel. Here is the before picture of the unit:
The first phase is about turning off the water. To do this, duck under the sink and shut off the hot and cold water valves. Turn the handles on to release any remaining water and to make sure that the water is all the way turned off. Next, put a bucket under the sink and, using a wrench, losen and remove the cap but on the shut off valve. Some water may fall and be caught by the bucket. With your hand, losen the PVC pipes by turning the ears and just disconnect it. Use a box cutter to score the caulk fixing the sink to the vanity top. Then, lift the sink right out from the vanity top.
Next, I wanted to keep the marble, but trash the cabinets. I scored the caulk between the two with a box cutter. I used a chisel and rubber head hammer to get them fully separated, then lifted it clear. The marble was extremely heavy so it make be useful to do this with two or more people. After the top was clear, I used a screwdriver and crowbar to dismantle the base completely. The space ended up like so:
Now the space is clear enough that I can continue onto removing drywall and flooring. More to come later!
Suggested materials:
  • Bucket, wrench, box cutter, chisel, rubber head hammer, screwdriver
