Thrift Store Tray Mirror

Have you ever seen a tray quite like this at the thrift store? This looks like a tray to hold a wine bottle and maybe grapes? Maybe wine glasses? Cheese?
Whatever it held in it’s previous life, the finish was getting kind of shabby. I must say, the grapes have held their color, but the rest of the tray was showing wear.
At first I just wanted to sand down the grapes and get rid of the cup thingy but I changed my mind and now I’m seeing mirror. I’m using pallet wood and a mirror I picked up at Michaels …$5 for a 12 inch mirror..to complete my project.
I didn’t have a circle I could use that was the exact size of the bottom of the tray so I’m making my own by just pressing a sheet of newspaper into the bottom.
Use the newspaper pattern to mark the pallet wood and cut with a jigsaw or scroll saw. The pallet wood covers up the edge of the mirror.
Did you notice that I cut the pallet wood piece on the bottom right just a little too short. The pieces should be long enough to cover the edge of the mirror by at least a half inch.
Use a bowl or other round object to mark the inner circle.
Cut and sand.
The tray was quite a bit lighter than the pallet wood so I treated it with the same technique I used for a mantel a few weeks ago, a coat of vintage wax with a couple drops of black chalk paint mixed in.
Final touch, upholstery tacks around the edge of the tray.
You would never know there are grapes under that mirror.

WOW I sure love this! I would just like to know how you got the tacks so evenly spaced around this? I have tried this before with the individual tacks and it is no easy feat.
