How Do Pond Fish Cope During Winter?

One of the joys of our work is creating ponds for homeowners and commercial businesses that are stocked with various pond fish -- especially beautiful koi. These orange beauties can be maintained in fairly small spaces.
However, some might wonder how well they survive winter -- especially winters like we've had this year?
Koi body temperatures are regulated by the water surrounding them. Don’t be alarmed if your koi aren’t moving during cold weather and in icy water.
Unlike in warmer months, when pond fish are downright friendly and very active, they tend to conceal themselves and remain dormant when it’s cold.
However, long periods under frozen ice will cause a lack of oxygen and the fish may go beyond hibernating into a state of torpor. Keep waterfalls running to circulate water.
Gases from rotting and decomposing plants may also cause a build up of poisonous gases.

I laid out screens over my "Kidney shaped" pond just before fall to prevent leaves from getting into the water .. it worked rather well . I uncovered the pond the other day and fed the goldfish who were enjoying a warm (70 degree) sunny day... The sun warmed the water enough that they became active enough to come up and eat and swim around a bit... they have all been down on the bottom of the pond during this cold weather, but all seem to have fared well through it!
