Douglas Hunt on Feb 10, 2014Jay has identified this plant as cardinal guard. It is Pachystachys coccinea. But cardinal guard also sometimes refers to Odontonema strictum. They do not really look alike. The latter is much hardier than the former, as well as being easier to grow. It is hardy to zone 8, where it may die back to the ground but should quickly resprout in spring.Helpful Reply
