It will be the side next to where the kids will play all the time...even if it's not plants but something to separate play area and grass from side if the house...
I was also thinking paving a walk way but then???

I'd buy plants that do not have thorns or are scratchy and are hardy if a kid gets into it getting their ball or something. Go to a plant nursery and get assistance there as you do not say how much sun it gets or what area of the country you live in.

If you choose to put in a walkway, remember that the ground has to slant slightly away from the house for water drainage.

Hostas are easy too grow. Not maintenance except or cleaning up later on.

Sunny or shady? Hostas and lirope and ivy are great shade plants. Cannas, iris, and sage shrubs love sun. Use plants that will thrive in your planting zone.

Euyonomus are hardy shrubs that can stand up to a little bit of trampling from kids. They come in a variegated green/white or green/yellow. They require little maintenance, a simple trim to keep in shape with hand clippers each spring.

Hostas and succulents are some of my favorites.
