There are so many beautiful pieces of inspirational art on the market today. There can be hefty price tags that go along with them as well. However, I am a thrifty girl, and I just love the challenge to try and create projects that may be a little bit beyond my budget.

This project is so easy, fun and customizable! You will not believe how you can use inexpensive materials to create a piece of inspirational art that suits your fancy. You will want to create several of these art pieces to give as gifts to those you want to inspire.

Foam Board (from Dollar Tree)
Begin by using a foam board. It can be found at most box stores. I bought this one from the Dollar Tree. The reason you see little pieces of tape in this photo is because I had already begun to tape the project on the reverse side, but I wanted to SKU tag to show in this photo. (The second photo will help you understand what I mean.)
Use painter's tape to help create the stripes that will be the background of your faux canvas art. There really is not a science on how far apart to place the stripes. You may even notice that I have some larger spaces between strips of tape. I had initially planned to add some thin brown lines to the project, but changed my mind.
I used the pearl white and blue paint to create a light blue shade for my project. The brown was used later for lettering the words on the inspirational art.

I mixed the paint to create the shade that I wanted. One suggestion I have is to only use a little of the darker color at first, and then, gradually add the darker color until the mixture is the color you like.
Paint the foam board and let the project dry (15 minutes) before removing the tape. I used a fan to help the project dry. Also, it is a good idea to use a larger brush than I used because it would take less time to paint the project.
When removing the tape, I noticed that some areas of the paper on the foam board was tearing! (Yikes) I used this miniature craft dryer to help warm the tape so that it would not tear the foam board. (Whew!) While I was painstakingly removing the tape, I had an epiphany...The next time I create one of these, I plan to coat the foam board with Modge Podge prior to taping.
I used the brown paint to write my inspirational message, using the stripes to help me with spacing. The brown paint dried, and then I followed up with two coats of Modge Podge, allowing drying time between each coat (10 minutes each time, under a fan).
Voila! The inspirational sign is all done! The cost was minimal because I bought the foam board for $1, and I already had tape, paint and Modge Podge on hand.

This project is very easy, and very rewarding because I can create these faux canvases and hang them throughout my home. I chose to place this one on top of a hutch in a guest room and let it lean against the wall. I also have a metal stand that I may place it on when I move it to the family room upstairs.

No matter where you place it, this work of art will look great, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing you created it yourself!
