Why won't my clematis thrive?

We bought a new clematis and planted it, had a trellis to support it and kept it watered and fed. The first year, it died off nearly right away. Rather than pull it out, we left it over the winter. This spring, it sprouted new leaves, looked healthy and even grew a few flowers. But soon after that, it browned out, dried up and looks dead. What are we doing wrong?

This is EXACTLY what has happened with mine! Lots of stories on this site about plants not "acting normal" this year. I haven't seen any answers to all this yet. I am in the midwest, and we've had a huge amount of rain for several months. I suppose this could be part of it, but not all areas are getting the moisture, but are still having plant problems. Maybe next year will be better!

Hello Gretchen S, It might not be a problem with the plant. It might be a problem with the soil. I recommend mixing a tablespoon of Epson Salt in a gallon of water. Make sure the salt dissolves. Then pour it on the soil at the base of the plant. Then water it real good. The extra watering will help the roots receive the Epson Salt. That will put enzymes back in the soil. Also, I would prune the plant in the Fall. You should see a big improvement next Spring. Hope this helps you. Good luck.

Clematis can be difficult to establish. Sometimes they aren't cared for well prior to purchasing. They are picky about soil and need one that has good drainage, but keeps the roots moist- like a potting soil with vermiculite. If the soil is heavy clay, very rocky or too hot a compost then dig it up and change out the soil.

Clems like the base of the plant covered (there are many ground covers for this) and the top vine in sun.

A pick me up of the Epsom salts and a once a week fertilizer with removal of what is dead/struggling should perk up your plant. Trim according to variety as some bllom on new wood and some old.

Clems are glorious, even if they are a bit picky! Good luck with yours.

Clematis like the cold feet/warm heart rule...which is to say there should be other things planted around the clematis but the trellis should be in a warm sunny location...could this be the problem?

The clematis doesn't like sun on its roots

Plant then cover the ground w peices of slate

Also they like lime sprinkled in dirt

    Good luck
