My wife wanted a small table to go on our new deck. She gave me free rein to design and build whatever I wanted, her only requirement was that it not be more tha 5 feet long and that the cushions she bought fit on the stools.
I purchased some African Sapele to make cutting boards but decided to use it for the table top and incorporate another species of wood like a cutting board (Oak). I also used red cedar for the legs of the table and the stools.
I started by selecting the wood and hand drawing the leg support system and determining the overall size.
Next I had to trim the rough lumber to get perfect edges in order to join the different boards of the table top. The Sapele and oak were edge glued and clamped.
I cut and glued the stool seats and measured and cut the cedar for the stool legs.
I assembled the the stools and finished them with 4 coats of an outdoor Spar Varnish To protect the wood from turning gray in the sun.
completed the table assembly and added some support for the table legs. Applied 4 coats of the same Outdoor Spar Varnish.
Added eye bolts to the chairs so the cushions could be anchored and not slip off the stools.
