Caulking or Sealant around the tub/shower

I need to replace, to freshen up, the clear caulking or sealant that goes around the top of my tub/shower. I am not sure what product to use or how to do it. (I am in Canada - so a Canadian product please) But it looks like it should be something I can do. And and ALL advice would be very welcome. A link to a good video showing the process would also be very helpful.

I always use a silicon caulk thats for bathrooms that says it has a mildewcide in it. Clean all the old stuff out first, they make a silicon softner in the can if you can't get it off.

ello Deborah, Here is a video shoiwng you exactly how to do it properly, and the most mentioned type of silicone I have seen mentioned that is available in Canada is something called LEXEL by Sashco, or you can find some at your local Home Depot or Lowe's there in Canada :)

Good Luck, and thank you for using Hometalk for a solution :)

Use clear or white water-resistant silicone. You don't say what color your tub/shower is. Let us know.

OH! Never thought of that. sorry. The tub is white. The previous sealant was clear and I think I prefer that. So I am going with clear again. But other than that I have no idea how to do this! SO I am LOVING this feedback!

This is the best stuff ever! I've used nearly every brand of bath caulking at the hardware store in the past. I found Flexshot last year, and it is amazing! So much neater, cleaner, easier to use, and easier to maintain. I'll never use anything else again.

Ok....so I have everything I need to put new caulking around my tub. My question now is......How do I remove the old stuff without damaging or scratching my tub or tile?

It must be dug out or scraped out completely. This is not hard, but it most likely will require time, patience and elbow grease. Use anything that you may have already that is strong and narrow and will not scratch the tile. I have not yet found any particular tool available retail. Maybe other Hometalkers have?

After all the old stuff is removed, clean all the grooves thoroughly to ensure that there is not residue from the old caulking, and using bleach to ensure that there is no mould. Dry completely. Using a hair dryer helps to get into the ridges.

It is very important that the ridges are completly dry before putting on the new caulking and also very important that the new caulking is completely dry before using the tub again, to ensure optimal adherence.
