Hello, I am removing wallp in my upstairs hallway. I've taken the first layer off and now all that's left is the brown backing paper. I've noticed it smells a little and my question is is it ok for my children to be around the area and take in that smell?

I wouldn't. You don't know what chemicals were used when this wallpaper was made and it could be potentially dangerous.

What state is your home in?

The smell is more likely the adhesive. It really is harmless. Just the smell of wet adhesive. You can open a window to get rid of the odor.

Use a fan and open the windows for ventilation and keep the kids out of the area if at all possible. It would be helpful if you had an idea about how old the wallpaper was so you could research what the paper itself and the adhesive is made of.
