Wood is wearing, and I would love to paint the table a deep blue.
Any advice?

Sand it or use steel wool so you get a smooth finish, wipe it down, prime it (you may want to sand it again with 0000 sandpaper or steel wool), then paint away!

The prep work is the MOST important!!!

When I Refinished mine 7 years ago...I washed it down with TSP. I then Sanded and washed down again. I primed it using a Bonding Primer. After it dried for a few day I painted it a dark charcoal gray. Waited another day and did a second coat. Waited a few more days after that and put a water based satin poly over top. It still looks amazing to this day. And best of all it washes beautifully!

Hello Rachel; Do you leave your table outside, year-round? If so, it will wear heavily due to the elements.

Home Depot makes a Wonderful waterproof stain and sealer by the name of Behr.

If I were redoing your table, this is what I would use!!!

I hope that this helps you!!! Take Care!

Sure! I always recommend chalk paint. If you're not familiar with it, chalk paint is different than chalkboard paint LOL. I recommend Annie Sloane chalk paint, it's very easy to use, and you hardly have to do anything to prepare your table. No sanding is required, unless you have some really rough spots that you want to get rid of. You can even buy a couple of different colors and mix your own custom color. Simply wash the table well, and follow the painting directions. There are also youtube videos on using that paint, and a ton of Pinterest pages. Have fun, I've refinished at least 6 diffevent pieces with it and they look great.

Hi Rachel. First roughly sand it to make sure the paint will stick. There is a product called unicorn spit. It turns out beautiful, especially when using a color on wood. Here is a link.
