Hi! if you mean that you can see the shape of boards and gaps right on the carpet surface, I would think a new or additional layer of carpet padding would help. The carpet would have to be removed to do this but then could be put down again afterwards. I think that might do the trick for you! Good luck!
Consider layering a second rug over the carpet that is complimentary in color and design to your existing carpet and decor.
Once its worn through, its done. Replace it and it will be healthier too, as old carpet holds tons of dust, dirt and mites.
If your carpet is wall-to-wall, you might take scraps to patch the worn spots -- if you have left overs from when the carpet was laid or maybe if that carpet is also in a closet you could scavenge that. I've seen carpet layers use a heated tool to fuse a backing to patches or to connect two sections of carpet.
