Will you be renewing an existing sofa and chair? Do you currently have materials such as wooden pallets or wooden cable spools on hand that you'd like to repurpose? Are you wanting to paint and / or reupholster?

I'm starting from scratch. If I could find a cheap 60's retro loveseat or chair, that had the slender round tapered legs with the metal caps on the ends, and if it had good bones, I could just put new foam and upholster, but I can't find one, to save my soul. They want antique store prices for them. I have a pattern for one made of wooden pallets , but it's more labor intensive and I don't have the transportation to pick them up. The stores that have them will give them to you, but I can't pay to have them delivered, as I'm on a limited budget. I don't have a wooden spool, but wouldn't want one too large. What are your ideas? I can paint and/or reupholster.

If you are wanting to update current furniture, you can actually paint the upholstery with chalk paint.

I wasn't looking to do this, but If my chair I'm keeping doesn't jive color-wish with the other pieces when I have them, this is something I'll keep in mind. Never knew you could do this. Thanks.

if you want to start from scratch you can transform an old bed frame into a lovely loveseat. http://lindycottagehill.blogspot.com/2010/10/tv-table-redo.html?m=1

I love the way your loveseat turned out. I could use that idea with a more modern bed frame, to get that retro look I want, and either leave the arms off or lower them, and if it's on legs, buy some tapered round legs and put them on instead. I could spray paint the whole thing white and get a nice bright retro color fabric for the cushions, (will cost some to make those, unless I can find a used sofa with good cushions, or use floor pillows as they would be thicker). Thanks for lending me your brain, sometimes it takes one brain to jumpstart another one. lol

Your best bet is to keep an eye out for the "bones" of the furniture. Then you can paint, refinish and/or reupholster to bring out the retro.

Hello Patrick; Have you ever considered purchasing Real retro pieces at a Thrift store, Flea Market, or at a Yard Sale??

I am only mentioning this, as I have seen some awesome pieces, and the prices are quite reasonable as well!!!

If you do not like the material that they pieces are covered with, redoing them can be as easy or as complicated as you wish.

Good Luck with your Furniture!!! Take Care!

Yes I would do some major thrift store shopping first. The loveseat you could use a plywood plank, get some of the angles 50s style screw in legs at True Value, get a 4" slab of foam, and enough fiber sheeting to cover the foam, some pillows of your choice and sew a covers using some retro mid-century fabric like atomic, barkcloth.... fabric.com has retro fabrics. I did my 60s chaise in giraffe vinyl. The chairs you can find in thrift stores easy, just keep looking.

Have you considered looking at the Goodwill or Salvation Army Thrift stores? You can also make a loveseat out of an old bed stead - the headboard is the backrest and back legs, the footboard is the seat and front legs. The bed idea is a lot less labor intensive and would already have some design elements (based on the original design era of the bed:) This link may be a place for you to start (re. the bed stead idea:) http://rilane.com/diy/77-diy-bench-ideas-storage-pallet-garden-cushion/

    Good Luck!
