Fabric, scrap paper or any pretty paper mod podged onto it.
You could decoupage pretty napkins on it. Or you could use liquid shoe polish. Squeeze just a little polish into the sponge. (No drips). Apply the polish on any raised design or in smooth strokes with the grain. Or you could use a paste wax and apply, buff, and shine to the max. Best wishes 😇
Cover it with silk leaves in a pattern, twigs, mirror, shattered plate mosaic, graphic photos, weave ribbon over it, retro fabric, coat in glue and glitter it, .... I could go on all day.... hope it provides inspiration.
