What to do with hated blue tile counter and splash back

I would love a solid counter such as granite. Would removing the tile be a super major project? I simply cannot keep the grout clean for even two days. Putting granite on top would make it too high. Any suggestions? I have limited funds to work with.

  • Many times tile can be easily removed but it is a messy job. Granite is expensive and it also is high maintenance. It has to be sealed every year or so and you do not use any chemicals on it at all-wet rag or special granite cleaner. If any anything acidic is spilled on it and not wiped up in a timely manner, you will have pitting and marking. Granite is beautiful and I have 2 areas in my kitchen with granite so I am speaking from experience. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot (or any homestore ) and check out how much their in stock counter tops are and save up. For now I suggest you use a bleach spray cleaner on your countertops every time you wipe to try and keep the grout clean. You may also want to consider re-grouting to a darker color such as gray to help with this problem. Good luck

time to call in the pros. First ask around, get suggestions, Many granite fabricators will give you a free estimate..... pick their brain in the process.. ask if you can save $$ by doing your own demo. ASK about how often you must re-seal the granite. New technology has changed that game alot... also the cost. My first estimate was $9,000 and yearly re-seal. 'three years later it was $4000 and he told me that I would need to reseal in "about a hundred years if you use Comet cleanser on it everyday"

I would not do granite for all the reasons mentioned by C Renee Fuller. She has given very good advice. Good luck.

Or just seal the grout. Grout needs to be re-sealed yearly, sometimes 2 X's a year depending on your sealer. They gave sealers at Lowes. Cheaper than Granite...about $7.00.

I had the same problem, so I just painted the grout with a normal latex enamel several years ago, and it still looks great! I didn't worry about getting it on the tile because my tile is smooth, and it just came right off. So if your tile isn't smooth, just try a bit first to see if it comes off easily.
