Maybe try warming the dryer to get the top gum off and then deal will the lower layers that can be the most stubborn.

dear nancy thanks for your help.I warmed the dryer for a few minutes then used a plastic scraper to take out the chunks of gum. After that I used rubbing alcohol to take off the residue. I'll remember to check my pockets next time. thanks again.

The ideas here are good. The residue is what always gets the most elbow grease. I've used solvents such as GooGone in minute amounts on a scrub pad with success. But, then you have to make sure the oily residue is gone, also. Try a damp green scouring pad with some baking soda. Let it sit for a little while and then scrub some more. Good luck! I managed to get ink out of a drum with this method also.
