Could it have been over watered by any chance?
Pat, Unfortunately it might be root rot. Here is a link that might help you understand what is going on:

If it can be salvaged, use this fertilizer. Put the following in a blender: banana peels, coffee grounds and egg shells. Blend and put all around plant.
Yeah mine aged out and just died one year. I just replanted a new one.
