If you have ever seen the perimeter of a Long John Silver's Restaurant? It is surrounded by round posts of varied heights that are wrapped in heavy twisted rope that is draped to resemble a pier or edge of a board walk. The posts all have the grey 'weathered look' that can be replicated with chalk paint. You can use this idea as a backdrop. Lay down landscape fabric and cover it with bags of play sand. You will need to segregate this sand from you lawn so will need to decide if you want to locate larger, craggy-looking rocks, pieces of drift wood or find someone who has an uprooted tree and use the tree bottom upside. The roots make an interesting sculpture. You may choose to drape it with aged-looking fishnet. Dye it tan, stretch it to dry and slash some of it to look like tears. If you cannot find these in your area, Place ad for these as "Wanted" on Craigslist.

Any chance you have a real Army-Navy store within driving distance? I mean the kind that has lots of junk piled up, not made in China souvenirs and fashion camos no serviceperson would ever be issued. At this store, you might find an anchor of any size, real nautical flags, a ship's galley plates or pots, or other cast offs.

If you want to go nautical but not military, you could use any of the above items, but they can be more eclectic. Cut a small canoe or boat in half lengthwise, mount each half on your fence, and use as planters or just decor. Hang a faux ship's steering wheel or masthead statue. Hang pier lanterns with solar lighting. Have fun with your designs. If Popeye watches from the side of a storage building and Olive Oyl from the concrete patio floor, welcome them aboard. Best wishes 😇

Con't... some sea shells you may find at a Pier One Store and add these atop the mix, but they are probably too expensive. Again, you may find someone who is happy to send you some. Place your "wanted" Craigslist ad in an ocean side city listing and then offer to pay them the shipping costs to your home. Go to a re-sale shop to find an old oar to stain, distress and use as a prop. Do you know anyone with a jig-saw? You might use a cut-out of a starfish. Seal it with a deck paint and cover it with "Stones in a Can" textured spray paint to make it look like the bumpy exterior of the starfish. Ditto to the silhouette of an anchor, etc. For plants? You may choose to grow blue star morning glories or some kind of clematis vines. Or, try several short growing ornamental grasses that look like they may be growing near a sand dune. Good luck! I like your plan!
