Making Kitchens/Rooms Look Taller

To make a ceiling look higher, do you take cabinetry or curtains to the ceiling, or do you leave a space? Also, for cabinetry, do you build soffit down to cabinetry to make it look taller?

Taking cabinetry up to the ceiling will help enhance the space and give the appearance of height. Steer away from soffetts. While cabinetry is more expensive you'll have more storage space instead of dead space with a soffets. You can choose longer cabinets or standard sized with smaller cabinets above them. Glass doors on the upper cabinets with cabinet lighting adds interest and enhances the space. Use these cabinets to display your most prized collectibles (don't overdo...consistency and themes with pops of color are the best for these spaces). Always, always place window treatments inches above the windows frames to help give the illusion of height. The exact height depends upon the ceiling height and any crown molding at your ceiling. A picture of your space would be helpful to give you some suggestions. Roman shades are also a good choice and these can be placed inside the window frame but, again, this depends on the space and what look you're trying to achieve.
My cabinets go to the ceiling and I love them. Curtains hung high and a light wall color can help too.
