Do you love French decorating? I sure do, but I enjoy a French touch here and there without going all out. There are too many decorating styles out there for me to devote a whole lot of time, money, energy, and thought to just one. I love a combined eclectic look that reflects our family's loves, tastes, travels, style, and history. Almost every room in our home has a little touch of French decor in it, and each touch was oh so very easy to add.
ADD SOME LAVENDER
To me the scent of lavender and the French countryside go hand in hand. Even if you don't grow lavender, it's easy to fill your home with its wonderful fragrance. You can buy lavender petals on line, and put them in bowls that you place in different rooms. Enhance the scent by adding a few drops of lavender oil. You can also make lavender linen water and spray your clothes when they come out of the dryer or spray your pillows before you go to sleep. Be prepared to sleep like a baby. We have directions for lavender linen water on our blog. You can also make some lavender soap (how-to on our blog) and use it at bath time. The easiest way to get a lavender scent in your home is by burning a good-quality lavender candle.
Another way to add some French to your home is by listening to the French Cooking Channel on Pandora, which is free. We have this channel on in the background most of the day, and the soothing music inspires me to get some work done. I'm listening to it right now.
Make or buy some French ticking linens for your table. I own some antique French ticking, but it isn't something I would not want to use on our table when we are eating. I use it as a table runner between meals. So, I decided to make some French-like ticking place mats. It was so easy. I just bought some linen like place mats and painted stripes on them with fabric friendly craft paint. If you want to make your own place mats, that would work, too. Right now I am working on a French ticking runner for fall using autumnal colors. If you want see how I painted the place mats, please visit our blog. (Link below).
Another very easy way to add some French is by creating a French shopping list. I used a very old chalkboard that my grandmother wrote on in elementary school. It is over 100 years old. However, similar chalk boards can be purchased online or at a craft store. My list says chicken, bread, milk, beef, and cheese, but you can add any French words that you want. We have six more tips for bringing French into your home. Please visit the blog my daughter and I write called, The 2 Seasons.
