What is your location, lighting and preference
Our front door is smack in the middle of the house. When we finally removed all the scrubby looking shrubs along the front of the house, we turned the area on the west side into a seating area with pavers between the sidewalk and the house. We really love that area. We have two huge mature trees in front, so we don't get much sun, we put in a hosta garden with three different hostas to tie in with others that were already there. I also put in a couple of perennials that can get along with only a little morning sun.
Lilac bushes are wonderful to put in front of windows
We Put Blueberries (3-4' tall) and a Goji Berry out front. The flowers in spring, then the berries, then the leaves in fall are beautiful! :)
depends the height and coverage you want I think lilacs, forsythia etc grow large quickly... lately I have been living the look of hycinthia. Beautiful color summer to fall
