Depends on how much 'handling/use' the piece will get; wax won't hold up to wear/tear; I'd use a flat poly

only advice is - If using a varnish etc. Make sure it dries clear and will not yellow in time!
Hi there! Applying a coat of clear wax will deepen the colour of the paint and create a beautiful, matte finish. Hope this helps!
