Hi Barbcorn1,
I saw the above article as well, but I didn't see anything about filling the grout lines to make them smooth.
I've been searching for about 1/2 hour or more looking for an article online that would help you. The only one I found basically said you can't do it because tiles are slightly rounded on the edge and there would be nothing to make it even there. Knowing that, the only idea I can think of would be to cover the whole thing with a thin board of some type, attach it, covering the top and side edges, then painting that.
If it was me, I'd probably try spackle compound but I'm not sure if it would work. If it was my house and I made the mistake - well, I'd live with it and try something else but your house is not mine and I really don't want to suggest you do that - ya know?
Maybe someone who has actually done it will see your question and have a better answer.
Good luck!
my friend just did her back splash and instead of painting she bought those peel - n-stick tile "look" ......she bought the ones that are oblong about 2" long and scattered -- they look great!
Here are 2 links that I found on HomeTalk about painting tile. One is for painting inside a tub/shower (which I did and it came out great, using Rust-oleum tub/tile kit. They have limited colors). The other is for painting tiles where they are not getting wet everyday. I hope this helps.

Per a Behr paint rep: clean tile well with TSP. Apply a basecoat of Kilz Adhesion Primer then paint with your color and finish of choice.
